John J. Petts was born at Hampstead, London and grew up there, and in South Devon, and then Bedford. After service in the Army, John went to evening classes in drawing at St. Martin's School of Art, supporting himself by working at Smithfield Market. Then, subsequently, 3 years full-time study at the Central School of Art, London.

In the 1970s, 1980s and early 90s John J. Petts was a storyboard and production artist for advertising agencies and film production companies in London. Drawing and colouring very quickly for tight deadlines!! John moved to Lewes, Sussex in 1991 to paint and draw seascapes, landscapes, townscapes (especially Brighton!) and had a first exhibition at the Lewes Gallery in 1994.

John moved to west Wales in 1997. He exhibits his work there, in Sussex and at the Chelsea Art Society of which he is a member. Lives near to Lampeter, Ceredigion.
